Starting with this book, I’m going to review thrillers here on the blog. I read in the genre I write — political and espionage thrillers — so these are one novelist’s reads of another’s work: what the writer got right, and what I took from it. No star ratings, just the review. First up, The Elias Conspiracy by Simon Gervais.

Gervais knows how power actually moves through Washington. The interagency machinery in this one rang true to me — the Defense Intelligence Agency, its headquarters at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling, the way DIA works with and around the other intelligence agencies.
But the engine of the book is pacing, and Gervais is a master of it, as well as shifting the point of view. His chapters are short, and each one ends on a hook that pulls you straight into the next. That’s what gives the book its momentum — it carried me through a big stretch in a single sitting.
Caspian Anderson earns the series. He’s a lead you want to follow book to book, not just a vehicle for the plot. And here Gervais makes his villain operative, Mia, genuinely sharp, with an interesting twist at the end.
If someone asks me whether they should read The Elias Conspiracy, my answer is yes: if you want an exciting, fast-paced thriller that leaves you wanting more, go get this book now!
